Pontiac Sunbird Turbo S/E Engine


Well, her's the engine compartment, Not much to see, since most of the engine is sitting where the driver and rear seats are, plus some of it is in the trunk.

Here is the entire camshaft


You can see one cam was worn close to round!

This is sad! 3 cracks and you can actualy SEE some of them! The cylinders had antifreeze and oil in them, and that is why the car didn't want to start. The knocking sound was from running on one cylinder till the coolant and oil burned out.


Here is the Intake manifold, turbo equipped of course! ( :

And here is the Turbo Charger itself. The circular device under the (did I say cracked) exhaust manifold contains a turbine that is spun by the rapidly expanding exhaust gas. That turbine is mechanicaly linked to the intake manifold and forces air and fuel into the engine. Passing a car with turbo or going up a hill does not compare to driving a "plain" car. I miss my turbo!
